The chain stitch is the earliest form of book sewing dating back to the 2nd century and was used by early Egyptians and is therefore often called Coptic stitch. This type of binding is sewn across the spine of the book and is strong enough to allow for the spine to be left exposed, allowing for decorative patterns to be created. The pages lie flat when open making it easy to use for writing or drawing.
